From Waste to Value: Policy, Economics and Living Labs for Bio-Waste Management

This set of abstracts explores how policy frameworks, economic instruments, and Living Labs can jointly accelerate the transition toward more sustainable bio-waste management systems across Europe. It highlights the role of waste charging mechanisms, particularly Pay-As-You-Throw (PAYT), in incentivising waste reduction and improving source separation, while also addressing the limitations of traditional flat-rate schemes.

Through the Bin2Bean Living Labs in Amsterdam, Hamburg, and Egaleo, the contributions showcase how locally adapted approaches combine financial incentives, stakeholder engagement, and operational measures to enhance bio-waste quality. Special attention is given to user identification systems and their alignment with EU data protection rules, as well as their potential to reduce contamination in dense urban settings.

Overall, the abstracts demonstrate how integrated governance, innovation, and experimentation can transform bio-waste into a valuable resource for soil regeneration and circular economy objectives.
